Summer Reading Book Club is a shorter, seasonal version of our Novel Studies course, with a lighter schedule and a special group rate.

Learn about metaphor, simile, irony, personification, and more! Join our small-group Summer Reading Book Club! Over eight weeks, students will read and discuss two engaging novels in a supportive group of only 2–6 students. The course includes one introductory week, three weeks for each novel, and one final wrap-up week.

Students will meet once per week for guided discussion and will read assigned sections of each novel outside of class. They will also complete study guides as homework to help them prepare for each session.

​

In class, we will discuss key story elements such as plot, setting, characterization, conflict, and point of view. Students will also explore important themes and practice identifying literary devices, including simile, metaphor, personification, imagery, repetition, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, and more.

This book club is designed to help students build stronger reading comprehension, improve literary analysis skills, and gain confidence discussing books with others.

HOW DOES IT WORK? 

 

Students will be placed into small book club groups based on reading level and interest. Possible groups may include levels such as grades 2, 3–4, 5–6, and 7–8, depending on student interest and enrollment.

Each group will receive a list of possible novels appropriate for that level. Students will then rank the books they are most interested in reading and indicate any books they have already read or strongly prefer not to read. I will review the rankings and choose two novels that work best for the group as a whole.

This process helps ensure that each book club group reads novels that are appropriately challenging, engaging, and enjoyable for the students in that class.​​
